Salon Guru, Karen Hodges, changed careers from business and finance to the beauty industry in 1998. She’s been a day spa employee, a booth renter, a salon owner and is now a solo practitioner in her PMU Studio in Fort Myers, FL.
“Education is what I’m all about. I was the person they sent to workshops to learn new software or office programs and products in my first career in the business world. That’s certainly followed me into my second career in the beauty industry!” –KH
Karen’s first cosmetology license was in nail technology, but she shortly started school again for her esthetics training. As a nail technician, she competed in the national competition arena garnering several trophies. She became a certified nail competition judge for industry icon, Vicki Peters.
A few years into her salon career, Karen became a certified trainer for the Association of Electric File Manufacturers (AEFM) and taught hands-on certification courses in proper and safe use of electric files. Around that time, she also began writing for industry publications such as NAILS, Nailpro, Les Nouvelle Esthetiques, Skin, Dermascope, Beauty Store Business and others.
In 2014 Karen partnered will well-known and respected nail and skin care specialist, Janet McCormick, to form the first of several online educational platforms. The partners currently offer a variety of advanced, distance-learning training programs for beauty and nursing professionals.
“It all started with a road trip…my long-time mentor Janet and I drove to an out-of-state networking event in the Smokies…and the brainstorming lead to the creation of a very successful and rewarding partnership in education.”
Education takes a lot of Karen’s time these days. She designs and administers a double-handful of educational websites. She also travels all over the U.S. to teach a variety of classes at tradeshows and educational events for prestigious organizations such as NASN, CIDESCO, ABS, ISSE and IECSC. When she’s not on the road, she’s in her studio “gilding the lily” as she says about her passion for Permanent Cosmetics.
